Tempura Tenzan

One lane in, along the stone paving of Hozenji Yokocho.
A little away from the bustle, in a quiet spot, you’ll find Tempura Tenzan.

What we treasure at Tenzan is conversation across the counter.
Listening to your preferences, we shape each next dish accordingly.

With only eight seats, we can offer hospitality tailored to each guest.
We want to serve the day’s finest ingredients at their most delicious moment.

With that thought,With that thought,

Tempura for special occasions, enjoyed more casually.
A place you can drop into, and want to return to —
that is the kind of restaurant we aim to be.

At our eight-seat counter, freshly fried tempura.

At sixteen I joined a ryotei in Kyoto, beginning this path through Kyoto kaiseki.
Through hotels and inns across Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima,
before I knew it, nearly forty years had passed cooking before our guests.

In fact, when I dine out myself, I always choose a counter seat.
Close enough to see the chef’s hands and catch the sound and aroma of the oil.
I believe that is where food tastes its best.

What I will not compromise on is the ingredients.
Even for a single stalk of asparagus, I check its origin and freshness.
Within our budget, I fry the very best of the day.
I want guests to taste dishes they could never make at home.

That is why, even when fully booked, I fry every last piece with the same care.

Until the moment each guest leaves with a smile,
I am here again today, serving from across the counter.

We reserved the daily limited lunch set for ¥3300 each. The restaurant is small and cozy with max 8 seats. The quality is exceed my expectation of a lunch set. Tempura is not oily and i particularly like the Spanish mackerel. It’s so juicy. The amount of rice is just right and don’t forget the pickles. Staff are very friendly and they have English menu.

Beautiful food that is individually and carefully cooked to perfection! Each bite offers a unique taste and texture experience that everyone should try. Some of my favorite bites were the tempura salmon, sweet fish, wagyu, and tempura egg rice bowl! And the dessert is the perfect way to end a meal. The staff is very friend and was able to explain the menu to us as in English as it was served.

We had a truly memorable evening at this restaurant. The tempura omakase was exceptional — every piece was perfectly fried, light and crisp, and beautifully presented. You can really feel the craftsmanship and attention to detail in every course. What touched us most was the kindness and hospitality. Even though we do not speak Japanese, the team always took their time to explain what we were eating and made us feel completely welcome and comfortable. That meant a lot to us. It was not just a dinner, but an experience we will remember from our trip. Thank you very much for the warm atmosphere and the outstanding food. We would gladly come back.

Food is excellent. I've never had tempura this light and delicious. The chef and the staff are super friendly and considerate to us. We strongly recommend this place if you like tempura!

A very welcoming spot for tourists! You can order à la carte or opt for a set menu, and they offer a great selection of sake and wine to pair with the tempura. The seasonal tempura is especially worth trying, along with their shrimp and crab selections — all fresh and beautifully fried. The tempura egg rice bowl is also a must-try; crispy, rich, and comforting. The head chef is friendly and full of character, and the staff are kind, attentive, and professional. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

Hozenji Yokocho

One lane in from the bustle of Namba, as you step onto the stone-paved alley, time seems to slow. Along this narrow lane of about 80 meters, long-established kappo restaurants and bars hang their noren — this is Hozenji Yokocho.

It began with vaudeville halls in the Edo period. Teahouses and stalls gathered for worshippers, entertainers, and patrons, growing into one of Osaka’s liveliest quarters. As the setting of Sakunosuke Oda’s novel “Meoto Zenzai,” its name is known throughout Japan.

Deep in the lane stands the moss-covered Mizukake Fudō. People quietly pour water over the statue and join their hands in prayer — a scene you’ll still find here today.

The stone paving underfoot was repurposed from old tram tracks. Though struck by fire twice, the lane was restored to its original form through the voices of some 300,000 people who wished to preserve its charm and the spirit of shop owners who shared their frontage. It is a lane that feels like the warm humanity of old Osaka itself.

As the lanterns light up at dusk, the stone paving is bathed in a soft glow. Tempura Tenzan sits in one corner. Before or after your meal, please take your time to savor the atmosphere of this lane, too.

About Sake

Sake is a Japanese drink made
from rice, water, and koji.

Depending on the region and brewery,
from crisp and dry
to rich and mellow,
the range of flavors is remarkably diverse.

There’s no need to overthink it.
To suit the day’s dishes or your mood,
enjoy a glass at a time.

At AWA we offer local sake from across Japan, changing monthly,
and we’re happy to recommend
the perfect bottle, even for first-timers.

On our last night in Osaka while wandering through Namba, taking in the atmosphere and soaking up the character and history of the area one last time. By pure luck, we stumbled across this little hidden gem. At that point, a lot of places were already closed, closing soon, or simply didn’t serve sake. Some even greeted us with a cover charge just to sit down, without drinks included. This place was different. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by Seiya, the bartender, who made the whole experience feel special right away. We came in hoping to try some delicious sake, and we absolutely hit a jackpot with this one. There were so many options, but after asking us a few thoughtful questions, Seiya guided us to some of the best sake we’ve ever had. I’m not sure whether it was the amazing sake, the incredible atmosphere, or Seiya’s warmth and charm, but we truly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect ending to our visit to Osaka!

I tried the veggie tempura menu and absolutely loved it. The staff were super friendly and everything was spot-on. Just a little note: the restaurant is very small, with space for only around 10 guests, so making a reservation in advance is definitely a smart idea.

I had the menu and my girlfirend some vegetarian Tempura. Really liked it. Service and Chef are so friendly and skills A reservation in advance is suggested as the Restaurant fits around 10 people.
